Rendering Emoji Shortcodes

[taylorskalyo]

GitHub and others support adding emojis by typing shortcodes. It's been stated elsewhere that this feature is unlikely to be added to render-markdown.nvim, but I wanted to experiment with it anyway. Below is a proof of concept implementation using a custom handler. Hopefully someone finds this useful :)

Requirements

You need a terminal and font that support emojis. Here I was using the foot terminal with:

font=MesloLGS Nerd Font Mono:pixelsize=12, Noto Color Emoji:pixelsize=12

Limitations

• Does not work in tables
  • Emojis get rendered twice for some reason
  • Table borders get misaligned
• Skips GitHub's custom emojis (e.g. , , , etc.) - these are not unicode
• Skips keycap emojis (:zero:-:nine:, :asterisk:, :hash: ) - not sure why, but I couldn't get these to render
