Don't generally need MPI, but currently there is a GLIBC mismatch between the cray-mpich libraries and what is in the shifter image. Will need to address that if we want MPI supported in shifter for this environment

Matt has kindly provided openmpi support in conda-forge for external libraries: https://conda-forge.org/docs/user/tipsandtricks.html#using-external-message-passing-interface-mpi-libraries
