No references when compiling with Latex-workshop

I experienced an issue, in which the references to figures are missing when compiling with Latex-Workshop. I tried to track down the issue via the log-file, but to me it seems unclear.

Disable all the other extensions except for LaTeX Workshop, restart VS Code, and check that you still see this issue. [Required]

Describe the bug [Required]

If I compile the tex document with the latex-workshop recipe, references are all missing. In the MWE I only included a reference to a figure. But in general all references are screwed. I have modified the pdflatex ➞ bibtex ➞ pdflatex × 2 recipe in order to user biber for biblatex instead of bibtex. But the issue also remains with bibtex. Especially for the figure reference bibtex vs. biber should not play a role anyways. If I run the four commands of the recipe manually in the PS terminal, the pdf contains correct references.

I don't have the problem with other projects. So my first guess is an issue with the document class which I am using for the first time. But I can't track it down. All options are based on a corresponding template. Do you have an idea what could cause this issue?
