This was proposed recently in a talk I gave on the Almanac for axe-con:

The HTML longdesc attribute has been abandoned and is considered obsolete. How often are the following tools used to replace it?
Current recommendations for providing long descriptions include:
Using a regular element to link to the description.
Incorporating the description directly in the page content.
Using ARIA attributes for improved accessibility.

Seems like a useful addition.
