@rviscomi I left a comment on #1764 a few days ago. I can look at others too and pick up some more.

Cool! Excited to see some thoughts on these.

I was wondering if we should keep a largely same visual theme for this year.
Or we can try going a bit on the overdrive

Or we can try going a bit on the overdrive

That's a very good question, and I thought I'd raised an issue on that but maybe I just planned on doing that but never got round to it.

I think there's pros and cons to a refresh or full design:

Stick with what we have

  • It works well
  • We've created a Web Almanac brand with the consistency and items like the book, and social media imagery.
  • Would be consistent across years
  • A lot of effort has gone into the current design to make it accessible, performant, internationalisible.
  • Less work

Redesign

  • After two years do we need a refresh?
  • Would we move old years or keep them on same design? How would that work for consistency? What about things like year-switcher when going between years?

Alternatively we could go for a smaller refresh, where we just refresh the images. Or maybe have a slightly different theme colour and/or home page, but leave the header and footer stay largely the same to avoid some of the concerns above.

What's your thoughts?

Makes sense. Avoids huge re-writes and maintains a consistency.

Keeping what we have makes sense. I suppose if there's possible enhancements we see within other issues we can bring them up.

One very small thing that I think might still be doable for 2020+ is to change the accent color:

image

Is there a palette of accent colors that would work nicely with the background color for each year? Since the year is displayed prominently in this accent color, it may be a good way to distinguish each annual edition at a glance. We could retroactively change 2020 so that each year has a different accent color, or maybe the current year is always yellow but past years change color. Not sure. Thoughts?

I like the idea of having the current year one color, and the past another. Helps make it more scalable :)

Is the original yellow color based on some contrast value?

Not aware of the reasoning behind it. The current design was commissioned by an agency.
