Since Android 12, Android has supported "themeable icons" as part of their Material You rebrand. Web manifests support the "monochrome" tag for icons, and I provide icons with these tags. They're used in some situations on desktop (not sure why tbh) but never on Android, perplexingly. This is an issue with Chromium/Gecko not supporting them properly I believe. According to the relevant Chromium bug it's not possible to do with shortcut, ie without WebAPK minting, but with WebAPKs (which is currently restricted to Chrome) it should be possible, but hasn't been implemented into Chromium yet. I don't think there's a Gecko bug at the moment (haven't looked) but regardless they're unable to do anything until Google are forced (or miraculously decide) to stop their anti-competitive conduct..
