a reproduce-able way to make sure the set up is the same each time.

maybe :

  • zoom out enough so the the poles are parallel at the edges of the shot
  • position the light at the top right of the drawing area and zoom in until it's there in the view finder

Possible verification step using drawing the rule of thirds grid using the lights to line up against the one on the screen.

Ideal version of hardware would allow it to measure itself during setup. Possible by having the gondola start at the bottom height whilst the poles are together and have it draw the gondola up until it hits a limit switch. You would then run the gondola back down on both sides. Separate the 2 poles to the distance you want and hold on to them then run both motors until a limit switch shows its horizontal. then do maths. That should give the total dimensions. use the code ideas in #5 . images are then either scaled to the draw area or rendered at actual size.
