Set Unit when submitting metric

I'd like to be able to specify the Unit type when submitting the metric. This does not seem to be possible with statsD so presumably there is some reason why its not done. What is that reason?
We have, literally, thousands of metrics and having to go through the Summary view and set each unit explicitly is time consuming and prone to error.
