lumberjack made a breaking change:

natefinch/lumberjack#83

which is causing confusion if the server is running as root, as people think they can't read their log files any more (#2341).

Related issues:

natefinch/lumberjack#164

There's a PR that would allow us to restore the previous behavior: natefinch/lumberjack#168 but it's still waiting to be merged.

Shall we fork lumberjack until it is merged?

47e6a56 works around it, but it's really ugly.
