Unable to use shortcode to show portfolio items

I have created a number of portfolio items. I inserted the shortcode into a new page (both manually and via motopress). Either way, when I load the page it does that 'circle thing' like it is loading the items, but then nothing shows. When I try to view the portfolio item from the editor I get the following error: Template file (*.tmpl) not found.
If I create another page and make it 'portfolio' template I get the same problems - items look like they are going to load but then don't.
I upgraded to the latest cherry-portfolio, but it still has the same issues.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
