Relative extent of these two main hydrosystems shifts with location of the hapua outlet along the beach barrier. Both lacustrine and riverine sections of the hapua are subject to tidal influence, but due to the volume of inflows, remain largely freshwater habitats. The wetland is associated with a spring-fed stream on the northern floodplain of the Rakaia River. At time of survey vegetation from private adjoining un-allocated crown land had been cleared, and the area fenced and sown in pasture. Relative extent of these two main hydrosystems shifts with location of the hapua outlet along the beach barrier. Both lacustrine and riverine sections of the hapua are subject to tidal influence, but due to the volume of inflows, remain largely freshwater habitats. Due to their highly dynamic nature, large river hapua generally support little or no wetland vegetation. At the Rakaia, there are limited areas of freshwater marsh along the inland margin at the relatively stable the northern end of the hapua.
