Slicer Launcher, qt-designer and friends

Some applications rely on checking the system environment to work properly and Slicer create its own environment before launching the slicer application (e.g., a new python environment with paths, etc. will be created). You can launch any application (e.g., qt-designer, renderdoc...) with the Slicer executable: ./Slicer --launch <command>.

If you launch qt-designer that way, you will get all the qMRML anc ctk widgets to use.

We can't get this feature to work. Trying it on mac cause QtCreator to crash immediately, and on Ubuntu it crashes when trying to open the .ui file.

Which Ubuntu are you using? Version of Slicer? I just changed my OS from Ubuntu to Gentoo and get a crash as well (Slicer/Slicer#6167), but last week this was working for me in Ubuntu. I'm going to roll back my Slicer and see if I find the cause.

BTW: You can use also ./Slicer --designer, which should get you the same result.

On Mac >./Slicer --designer crashes complaining about missing MRML classes. I am able to launch Designer with Slicer-build/bin/SlicerDesigner or from the Slicer gui: Application settings - Developer - Qt Designer - Launch. But, the Custom Slicer Widgets are missing.

@ALive-research/alive-software Slicer/Slicer@9766f4f did not solve the crash. I have proposed Slicer/Slicer#6178, which should solve it. @gatangen, @olevs, @jpdefrutosSINTEF could you give it a try and let me know if it works for you?

Good UI and qt-scripted-module example

I found that the SurfaceToolbox is a good example about the use of .ui files and qt-scripted-modules. It is part of the superbuild, to find the code, go to the repo or first build slicer and go to the build/SurfaceToolbox dir.

Adding extensions to a compiled Slicer
The extension manager in a compiled Slicer don't work. However it is possible to download extensions for a specific Slicer version using this address: https://extensions.slicer.org/catalog/All/30593/linux
The number needs to match the compiled slicer, and can be found under "About 3D Slicer": 4.13.0-2022-02-07 r30594 / 7610dde
Use the number after "r". There isn't compiled extensions for all commits, but going a few numbers up/down will probably work
