The default search algorithm used in ElasticPress makes assumptions on how to deliver relevant results to the users audience. The feedback we received from switching the search algorithm in ElasticPress 3.5 revealed quickly that there is no one search algorithm to rule them all.

While we implemented a filter in the code to switch between the new and old algorithm making the search algorithm more dynamic and identifying more content focused search algorithms that can be selected and configured through the plugin and provide a instant feedback on how the search results change with variation of presets and refining of variables would be ideal.
