I realize this feature could be horribly more complex but I'm looking for a way to go one or two steps further here and detect the type of upscaling done and reverse it to get the clean source.

Sometimes trying the default kernels available in this software still won't produce a good result: https://github.com/Irrational-Encoding-Wizardry/descale
So this is where detection of a possible best guess custom kernel could come in.
